The Cathedral of Basketball

Last night I went with a couple guys to watch an IVY League basketball game between Cornell and Penn. Cornell, regular season champs of the IVY and the first team to punch their ticket to the Big Dance, outlasted PENN 94-92 in a great back and forth basketball game. Cornell fans made up almost half of the crowd which was very dissappointing because the homecourt advantage atmosphere was pretty much nonexistent at the historic "Cathedral of Basketball", more commonly known as the Palestra www.palestradocumentary.com But the overall aura of the Palestra was pretty sweet. There truly was not a bad seat in the house and the hallways were filled with pictures and quotes of legendary figures in the game of basketball. Sports Illustrated ran an article awhile ago about the Top Ten college atmospheres to watch a game in. The Palestra ranked #5 and the Phog Allen Fieldhouse ranked #10. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0707/campus.top10.venues/content.1.html

Envy.

You think your J-Hawks will cough up a #2 seed to Bucky? Unless you can give me good reason, I cannot in good conscience put KU past the elite eight. Thoughts?

You got me there C. I don't know if I have a legitimate argument because I have been burned so many times in the tourney by the Jayhawks. So even though they have a pretty nice team this year, I'm not going into it very confident. That said though, I DON'T think that there are many teams out there that can be KU when they are playing their best. They have one of the deepest teams out there where they can bring 3 guys off the bench that can give you double digit scoring performances. UNC doesn't impress me and UCLA is getting lucky in there last couple wins so I don't know. GTOWN is one of the strongest teams and they just somehow find a way to win. I do think though that KU can make a run for the 'ship this year but they are going to have to play their game each round and either B. Rush or Darrell Arthur are going to have to be more aggressive with the ball. Self's big knock has always been that he is a heck of a recruiter but not a great in-game coach. That will definitely play out come Tournament time and I would venture to say that the coach who looks like the mascot (b.ryan) has a better in game coaching resume that Self.

Nice job on the #1 seed. Your boys have to be the least talked about #1 seed this year. Haven't gotten to see UCLA three times the last few weeks I have not been too impressed. Memphis looks good. So has Tennessee. Anyway, good luck- see you in Detroit.
